The Year on Youtube just dropped and some may be shocked to learn that a “disembodied head popping out of a toilet” is at the top of the 2023 list. Introducing: Skibidi Toilet. Sure, it is a bit freaky — and perhaps anarchic. But in the years ahead, we may be looking at this meme as a cultural touchstone: marking the transition from Gen Z to Gen Alpha humor on the Internet. Is this brainrot? A metaphor for a dystopian future? One big inside joke among Gen Alpha? To those still confused, think of it this way — isn’t every generation entitled to an inexplicable viral craze? From Millenials’ “Shoes” or more recently, Gen Z’s “Grimace Shake” — perhaps we’re all just a little unhinged.
